Junior HOOPS run over St. Augustine College 61 to 44

After a long draught from active games, the JV are back and hot as ever. These boys are very hungry for games and have been in training for some time now. One of the reason of their slow campaign is that most of the players are in boarding schools and are only available for games when they are on vacation. Notwithstanding, they are always available for practice during weekends and when ever they are available in town. The past few weeks, they have been training for a series of friendly matches to be held with their peers in Accra and Takoradi. Upon a short notice, the JV were ready to take on the challenge of playing Saint Augustine in their back yard. They were also excited that they were meeting the present senior secondary school champ of the Central Region. St. Augustine is known for putting out academic scholars and their present team is not to be under rated. The AUGUSCO boys were comprised of only SSS3 students whom are presently also writing their West African Examination (WAEC).

04/03/2008 Team Mario (HOOPS) wins 3 on 3 Basketball Tournament

Oguaa Hall of the University of Cape Coast celebrated their hall week with a 3 on 3 basketball tournament which was held at the hall premises. This is a yearly event which is highly anticipated by both students of the university as well as basketball lovers who are interested in participating in the tournament. This year was no exception to the fun and activities of the hall week. For the basketball event four teams registered to slug it out with each other. Each team consisted of a maximum of five players each. HOOPS represented with two teams, namely Team Mario consisting of Mario 5'10", Alinko 6'9", Taiwo 6'6" and Saheed 6'7". Saykan 6'3" was unable to part take due to ankle injury. Team Claudius consisted of Claudius 6'0", Emi 6'9", Desmond 6'9", Umoru 6'9" and Andrew 6'0". UCC had two teams representing from their end namely Team Kwateng and Team O2. The first match was played between the two HOOPS team representing and not because they are team mates but both sides from the day before where claiming that they had what it takes to over power the other. Although team Mario had the most experience players Team Claudius insisted though being an underdog they could still cause an upset. At the end Team Mario did show they had a better side by winning 32 to 15. The second match was played between Team Kwateng and Team O2. From the look of the players one could see that Team O2 would not be a match of their counterparts as Team Kwateng consisted of players of the University of Cape Coast. That match ended 46 to 17 against Team O2. The third place match was played between the two losing teams. Team Claudius eyes were already red from their defeat and made it known by going all out against their opponents. Team O2 was no match to their offensive plays and basket after basket were made. In the end the superiority showed by a score margin of 24 to 3 against Team O2. The main event between Team Mario(HOOPS) and Team Kwateng(UCC) was a spectacular one as both sides had the best players from each of their outfit. The final match drawed a large crowd from the university student body in order to cheer thier comradesto victory. From the begining of the match Team Mario showed that they were a better side and stronger as they took an early lead making the UCC boys to lag behind for the rest of the match. Univerisity of Legos(UNILAG) Wins 12th West African Universities Men's Basketball

Last Friday the final of the men's basketball was held at Legon between UNILAG of Nigeria and U.C.A.D. from Senegal. As expected by all, this was to be a fire cracker and the fans where not disappointed as these guys represented from the basketball power house of basketball in West Africa. Both sides met earlier in the group stages and UNILAG won with a single point margin. the lads from Senegal were not ready this time to be an underdog due to the past games. At the blast of the whistle both sides fielded their best five and it was entertainment galore from the beginning. There were ohh's and ahh's as the boys went for each other bringing in their best jump shots, layups and dunks. UNILAG led from the first quarter but slowed down in the last quarter perhaps because they felt comfortable that they had won the match. They almost had fever when the UCAD boys came near to ruining their pre-victory celebration. It was a close call in the fourth quarter and in the end UNILAG won 49-46. Hail UNILAG for being the 2008 men's basketball champions for the West Coast of Africa. Our brothers, UCAD played hard and we also congrat them for not going empty handed back home. We also send a big shout out to all athletes representing their universities from all over West Africa.

Ahmadu Bello University takes 3rd Place in West African Univerisities Games Men's Basketball

The 12th West African University games ended last Friday at the University of Ghana, Legon. In the basketball section, The Zaria boys played the third place match against the host university. the match was an exciting one from the onset with both sides giving all they have to come on top. Legon boys defending the home court and with the home crowd on their side played their best but it seems their opponents where just too strong for them. At the end of proceedings they lost by over 10 points margin. Big up to ABU for coming third and we also show love to our boys of Legon for reaching to that stage of the competition and showing that they are also a force to reckon with. Play harder next time and victory might just be yours.
